Who We Are

UBUNTU Counselling Services is a unique not-for-profit Health and Wellbeing Social Care Social Enterprise based in Devon. We work across the South West of England and further afield.

UBUNTU Counselling Services offers Multicultural Counselling, support and education.

The company is limited by guarantee with social aims co-founded in September 2010 by Dr Faith Stafford and Chukumeka Maxwell.  They were joined by John Woolner and Barbara Mitchel as directors in July 2011.

Dr Faith Stafford is a BACP senior accredited counsellor/psychotherapist and supervisor of individuals and groups. She is also a qualified business coach.

Our clinical psychology students are registered with British Psychological Society.

Governance is via the board of Directors, including expertise in clinical psychology and psychiatry.

All the directors have drawn on their years of professional and lived experience. We have a network of skilled professional associates, supported by university student placements to provide a holistic service (Holism) that is responsive to the individual, family and community needs of the “mind body and spirit”.

What is UBUNTU?

A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu offered a definition in a 1999 book.

He further explained Ubuntu in 2008:

One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu – the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. You can’t be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality – Ubuntu – you are known for your generosity.

We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.
